A few tough questions for Obama

If you only read one blog post today, read Doug Ross' Obama and Communism: Ayers, Dohrn and FARC, where he asks,
* Will Obama disclose his full relationship with Ayers and Dohrn?
* Will Obama disavow his relationship with Ayers and Dohrn as well as return any money that they have donated to him in the past?
* Were Obama's representatives speaking directly or indirectly with the communist terrorists known as FARC?
* Will Obama completely denounce Marxist-Leninist ideology, which was espoused by his father as well as friends like Ayers and Dohrn and groups such as FARC?
More tough questions at IBD
In a Feb. 28 letter, FARC chieftain Raul Reyes cheerily reported to his inner circle that he met "two gringos" who assured him "the new president of their country will be Obama and that they are interested in your compatriots. Obama will not support 'Plan Colombia' nor will he sign the TLC (Free Trade Agreement)."

Aside from some interesting possibilities about who these "gringos" are — a congressional delegation did visit Ecuador and an international leftist "congress" was held in Quito around this time — the real question is why anyone secretly consorting with FARC would be able to speak for presidential candidate Obama.

Obama hasn't said a whole lot about Colombia other than to criticize President Bush's good relations with President Uribe. With this correspondence suggesting that FARC knows what he thinks, maybe the American voters have a right to know what he thinks, too. Five questions come to mind:

1. Is it true Obama would cut off Plan Colombia military aid to our ally, which would serve the terrorist group FARC's interests?

2. Does Obama still oppose a free trade agreement for Colombia, even though that puts him on the same side as FARC in the debate?

3. Does Obama know or care that one of his staffers or supporters is claiming to disclose his positions in secret meetings with FARC terrorists outside government channels?

4. Can he tell us why his supporters would pass on such information to terrorists, and what he or she could gain from it?

5. Will Obama, as president, treat FARC as the serious terrorists they are, given that they still hold three Americans hostage?

These aren't idle "gotcha" questions, by the way. Based on his campaign so far, Obama favors meeting and negotiating with rogue leaders without preconditions, passing secret messages to foreign countries at odds with his public positions and tolerating Che-flag wielding leftists among his supporters who advance a radical agenda in his name.
American Thinker correctly warns we shouldn't jump to conclusions, but we're still waiting for the media to aks Obama a few tough questions. These would be a good start.

Carter, Gore and who else to end Clinton bid?

According to Chris Stephen of the Scotsman (via the Baron), It's Obama, stupid: Carter and Gore to end Clinton bid. Apparently
Former president Carter and former vice-president Gore have already held high-level discussions about delivering the message that she must stand down for the good of the Democrats.
My initial reaction was that I highly doubt that Carter, whose administration was a case study for wussiness and buckling under pressure, and Gore, who could have forced Bill to do the honorable thing and step down when impeached but didn't, have the gonadal fortitude to finally stand up to the Clinton machine after all these years.

Stephen mentions,
Both Carter and Gore occupy the rarefied position of elder statesmen – in addition to their White House past, both are winners of the Nobel Peace Prize, giving them additional gravitas to carry the party with them.
Gravitas, schramitas. Nowadays the Noble Peace Price is the Norwegian Badge of Uselessness, which fits those two to a "t".

BUT, if they have the entire Democrat party behind them, yes, they might:
But the party's top brass have concluded her further participation in the race can only harm the party as Republican nominee John McCain strives to take advantage of her increasingly bitter battle with Obama.
After all, Nancy - who never ceases to amaze and entertain - is on their side:
The campaign to force Clinton to make an early exit is being masterminded in Congress, home to the most influential of the superdelegates. Senate Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have called on superdelegates to hold an unofficial congress in early June to anoint a winner, rather than waiting for the convention in Denver.

Pelosi has drawn withering fire from the Clinton camp for saying that these superdelegates must follow the national vote, with Clinton insisting that they should "vote with their conscience".
As if Nancy knew what "voting with a conscience" meant.

Unfortunately for the lot of them, Obama's managed to step neck-deep in doo-doo by insulting the Pennsylvania wahoos who from now on will have to clamor for his help

in order for BHO to retain that lead he's worked so hard to lose.

While Al and Jimmy ponder the alternative use of their energies, folks at the New Republic are saying that a Clinton Campaign Further Strengthens the Democratic Party.

Months ago I said during one of Ed Morrissey's after-debate podcasts that Hillary wasn't going to give up until after there was blood on the Convention floor. So far she hasn't disappointed.

VDH asks, "The Chickens of Identity Politics Come Home to Roost? "

Today at The Corner, Victor Davis Hanson asks, The Chickens of Identity Politics Come Home to Roost? when it comes to the exceptions from the norms of public discourse:
This is what the triangulation of Obama has helped to unleash: most Americans will now doubt the moral authority of the African-American intellectual and religious community not just to question the questionable racial remarks of a Bill Clinton, Ed Rendell, or Geraldine Ferraro, but also the Wright-like crudity of a Don Imus or a Michael Richards. Context is now king.

This disastrous regression in race relations is the natural dividend of liberal identity politics, most recently brought to the fore by the wife of the first "black President", the first "transracial" black Presidential candidate, and the "prophet" and "healer" Reverend Wright.
It's high time we put identity politics to rest.

Until we do, all candidacies associated with identity politics will descend, as VDH puts it, into McGovern candidacies.

Obama's pastor cancels speeches; Obama releases tax records

Obama's Ex-Pastor Cancels Speeches ostensibly because of safety and security concerns.

Last Saturday Belmont Club had an excellent essay on racialist theologies, which you should read in its entirety,
Racialist theologies are so absurd that they are probably atheisms or political programs in religious disguise. Ivan in the Brothers Karamazov renounces God out of a love for mankind; he wants to supplant the deity with man. And when Jeremiah Wright puts a black man on the Throne of God we should recognize the obvious: that there is no God left after the transaction, only a man raised as high as human hands can hold. Dostoevky's character Kirilov observed "if you shoot yourself, you'll become God, isn't that right?" Or as Cone put it orbicularly "Hope is the expectation of that which is not. It is the belief that the impossible is possible, the 'not yet' is coming in history." He might have been talking about Obama.
Belmont Club links to The peculiar theology of black liberation, a must-read.

Obama took a brief vacation last weekend with his family in the Virgin Islands.

Apparently Obama stayed at the home of a well-known black nationalist, while Wright stayed at the Ritz Carlton Great Bay instead of tending to his congregation in Trinity Church during the highest of all Christian Holy Days.

Pamela has more on the VI trip.

More recently, Obama has released his tax records and urges Hillary to release hers before the Pennsylvania primary.

Fat chance on that.

If you read the article on the Obama tax records, you can see that earning $1.6 million in one year apparently was no reason for Ivy League-educated Michelle Obama to have pride in the land which affords her and her husband such riches and opportuniy, but clearly Michelle allocates her pride sparingly.

Darleen pokes fun at Obama, while Hillary's people look at Rezko,
Chicago Tribune: Obama's assertion that nobody had indications Rezko was engaging in wrongdoing 'strains credulity.' "...Obama has been too self-exculpatory. His assertion in network TV interviews last week that nobody had indications Rezko was engaging in wrongdoing strains credulity: Tribune stories linked Rezko to questionable fundraising for Gov. Rod Blagojevich in 2004 — more than a year before the adjacent home and property purchases by the Obamas and the Rezkos." [Chicago Tribune editorial, 1/27/08]
Here are 8 Things You Need to Know About Obama and Rezko

As if that weren't enough, Arab-American Activist Says Obama Hiding Anti-Israel Stance (h/t Marc)
In an article he penned for the anti-Israeli website Electronic Intifada, Abunimah wrote:

"The last time I spoke to Obama was in the winter of 2004 at a gathering in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood. He was in the midst of a primary campaign to secure the Democratic nomination for the United States Senate seat he now occupies. But at that time polls showed him trailing.

"As he came in from the cold and took off his coat, I went up to greet him. He responded warmly, and volunteered, 'Hey, I'm sorry I haven't said more about Palestine right now, but we are in a tough primary race.

'I'm hoping when things calm down I can be more up front.' He referred to my activism, including columns I was contributing to the The Chicago Tribune critical of Israeli and US policy [and said:] 'Keep up the good work.'
...
The Arab-American activist went on to say: "In 2000, when Obama unsuccessfully ran for Congress I heard him speak at a campaign fundraiser hosted by a University of Chicago professor. On that occasion and others Obama was forthright in his criticism of US policy and his call for an even-handed approach to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict."
Michael Goldfarb today posts on Obama's Jewish problem, related not only to por-Palestinian sympathies, but also to Trinity Church's publication of an open letter to Oprah Winfrey by Ali Baghdadi, "Middle East advisor to the Honorable Elijah Muhammad the founder of the Nation of Islam, as well as Minister Louis Farrakhan". The letter says,
The Israelis were given a blank check: they could test whenever they desired and did not even have to ask permission. Both worked on an ethnic bomb that kills Blacks and Arabs
Michael concludes,
Obama has a Jewish problem, whether or not it's merely guilt by association is irrelevant. Politics is about perception, and the perception is that Obama's one step removed from the Nation of Islam. If he wants to get the anti-Semitic stench of Trinity United off his campaign, it's going to take more than the all-clear from Marc Ambinder and Marty Peretz.
A lot more, and racialist theologies won't be the answer.

Obama's hateful friends: anti-Israel, anti-gay, pro-Hamas

Via Siggy, a roundup of eye-opening articles about the company Obama keeps:

Obama church published Hamas terror manifesto
Sen. Barack Obama's Chicago church reprinted a manifesto by Hamas that defended terrorism as legitimate resistance, refused to recognize the right of Israel to exist and compared the terror group's official charter - which calls for the murder of Jews - to America's Declaration of Independence.

The Hamas piece was published on the "Pastor's Page" of the Trinity United Church of Christ newsletter reserved for Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., whose anti-American, anti-Israel remarks landed Obama in hot water, prompting the presidential candidate to deliver a major race speech earlier this week.
...
In his July 22, 2007, church bulletin, Wright reprinted an article by Mousa Abu Marzook, identified in the newsletter as a "deputy of the political bureau of Hamas." A photo image of the newsletter was captured and posted today by the business blog BizzyBlog. The Hamas piece was first published by the Los Angeles Times, garnering the newspaper much criticism.
You can see the screen capture right here. Go read every word.

Obama's church pro-Hamas; in addition to the above, the article talks about the Global Poverty Act that Obama backs
Moreover, Obama has put a bill before Congress asking for immense taxpayer funds sent to Africa.

Obama will see through his bill in Congress. It's Global Poverty Act (S 2433) which would shell out of America $845 billion as welfare moneys to third-world countries.

What will this cost each of us?

The tab is a tax more than $2000 on each American breathing. Our nation's budget for foreign this-and-that already comes to $300 billion. But what's the diff? The Act would merely add the additional moneys out to the already elephant-sized total.
OBAMA’S CHURCH PRO-HAMAS

Also at Bizzyblog, Church Bulletin Bonus: Omid Safi and the Progressive Muslim Union (PMU).

Then there is Another 'Close Religious Adviser' to Obama Old Media Has Ignored, Illinois State Sen. James Meeks, who moonlights as the pastor of Chicago's Salem Baptist Church:
It's likely that the Obama-Meeks adviser relationship has not been as close as the candidate’s relationship with Wright, and though I could find no evidence of it, Obama may have spoken out against Meeks's ugly 2006 remarks.

But the news-related issue is why Old Media, first in the case of Jeremiah Wright, and now in the case of "close religious adviser" (and possible Illinois Senate mentor) James Meeks, never looked into their background. After all, neither man is a casual acquaintance, and a Republican or conservative candidate would never get the kind of pass Barack Obama received until the contents of certain of the Rev. Wright's sermons were revealed.
I'm their guy
The Rev. James Meeks is a South Side pastor-turned-politician who is considering a gubernatorial run as an independent candidate. In addition to shepherding the mega Salem Baptist Church, he's also a Democratic state senator and vice president of the Rainbow/PUSH coalition. However, Meeks disagrees with the Jesse Jacksons on lgbt equality and has made blatant overtures to the far right.
At Christianity Today
The pastor of the state's largest church, Meeks would use an anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage platform and said white evangelical leaders have encouraged him to run. "I've had tremendous response," Meeks said. "We are both very concerned with the direction of Illinois."
Rev. Irene Monroe:
At the Values Voter Summit in Washington last weekend, Obama's campaign announced that they, too, could help conservative voters have a voice in the presidential campaign. They then announced they would be hosting the "Embrace the Change! Gospel Series." It's a gospel fest to run in three South Carolina cities - Charleston, Greenwood and Columbia – this coming weekend with gospel mega-star Pastor Donnie McClurkin as part of the concert line-up.
...
McClurkin is not the only singer on the gospel tour who has publicly spewed vitriolic statements against LGBTQ people. But he is the biggest one Obama can use to try to win over black evangelical voters.

So once again, Obama is proving that his campaign marketed as "The Audacity of Hope" is really based on the audacity of hypocrisy.

Obama's grandma gets the bite

How sharper than a serpent's tooth it is
To have a thankless child!
William Shakespeare
According to Wikipedia, Obama's white grandma took care of him for several years,
Obama attended local schools in Jakarta from ages 6 to 10, where classes were taught in Indonesian.[14][15] He then returned to Honolulu to live with his maternal grandparents while attending Punahou School from the fifth grade until his graduation in 1979.[16]
According to Powerline, Obama
chose to live with his maternal grandparents rather than his mother, who was then in Indonesia
And she took him in.

So yesterday, rather than praise a woman who generously agreed to raise him for seven years, he refers to her as,
a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.
Throw grandma under the bus?

Yes we can!

The Obama speech

Obama's speech is mostly what I expected and Siggy predicted. Siggy and Shane Borgess both agree that
I would love for him to have given the speech he gave today to Jeremiah Wright twenty years ago... the same speech.
We discussed the speech in this morning's podcast (the first 30 minutes of the podcast were the speech itself). Siggy did a particularly passionate argument on how Jews in the South were not detained by the prejudiced they faced; Laurie Kendrick asked cogent questions; later on Jazz Shaw and Michele Huges join in. It was an animated and interesting conversation.

Obama could have disavowed the church but chose instead to essentialy say that rejecting Jeremiah Wright means rejecting the entire black community.

What I want to know, and what Obama didn't answer, is, why hasn't Obama disabused Wright, in all the 20+ years of their acquaitance, of all the horrible preconceptions and misconceptions Wright holds against whites.

I also would like to know how Obama reconciles his hopes for the next generation with his support for the murder of viable babies through partial birth abortion, among other things.

Of course I don't expect Obama to answer that. His speech (and the rest of his campaign until the Democrat convention) was aimed 795 specific individuals - Democratic superdelegates. And that's what he was after.

All part of the Obama bargain.

UPDATE
Stop the ACLU has roundup and the video of the speech.

Baldilocks:
Again I say that Obama's speech was well done--for what it intended to do: lure back those who were beginning to slip out of the camp. Those of us who were never there in the first place remain unmoved or are pushed further away.

Obama's pastor: Israel's a dirty word

Via Ace, listen for yourself:

As Ace said,
But you can count on Obama to support Israel. This is merely his "Crazy Uncle Jerry" who supports the Palestinian terrorists over Israel. It's got nothing at all, nothing I tell you, to do with Obama.
After all, those were not statements [Obama] personally heard him preach while [he] sat in the pews of Trinity Church.

I'm sure it'll all come together in his upcoming speech on race today.

While he's at it, Obama May Want to Rethink His New Black Panther Webpage.

UPDATE
The audacity of hypocrisy
Obama will do one of two things. He will either repudiate Reverend Wright and the Trinity United Church or he will seek to ‘redefine’ his relationship with Wright and the church.

It is unlikely that Obama will repudiate Wright or the church. He has already coming to the defense of Trinity United Church and his own long time association with Jeremiah Wright, whom he claims as a spiritual mentor.

That leaves Obama with the unenviable task of trying to rewrite history. It is even more astonishing that the attempt to redefine, reinvent and whitewash a bigot is being made by a credible candidate for the office of the President of the United States of America.
UPDATE
Obama promises to be a friend of Israel

Obama must have turned off the hearing aid, then.

We all have an elderly uncle or relative who turns off their hearing aid when they don't want to hear things. Some do it discreetly, some are more blatant about it, but hearing aids' on-off switches come in handy at times.

It appears Obama had turned off his hearing aid:

Just last Friday he was saying at the Huffington Post (an interesting choice of venue, that one, considering he has his own campaign website)
The statements that Rev. Wright made that are the cause of this controversy were not statements I personally heard him preach while I sat in the pews of Trinity or heard him utter in private conversation.
Which he repeated on TV,

There you have it: He didn't hear it while he was in the pews.

But apparently he was at the church during one of those sermons:
In fact, Obama was present in the South Side Chicago church on July 22 last year when Jim Davis, a freelance correspondent for Newsmax, attended services along with Obama. [See: "Obama's Church: Cauldron of Division."]

In his sermon that day, Wright tore into America, referring to the "United States of White America" and lacing his sermon with expletives as Obama listened. Hearing Wright's attacks on his own country, Obama had the opportunity to walk out, but Davis said the senator sat in his pew and nodded in agreement.

Addressing the Iraq war, Wright thundered, "Young African-American men" were "dying for nothing." The "illegal war," he shouted, was "based on Bush's lies" and is being "fought for oil money."
Since there are eyewitnesses that Obama was in the church when Wright was carrying on with his profanity, either Obama
1. was not in the pews
or
2. he had turned off his hearing aid and coudln't hear it.

Just One Minute raises the possibility that Obama had not been present for that particular sermon because was on a tight schedule that morning.

Fair enough.

In that case, perhaps Obama's hearing aid batteries must have run out while he was listening to Jeremiah Wright: The Greatest Hits Collection Volume 1. Obama has been sufficiently acquainted with Wright's sermons that the title of his book, The Audacity of Hope, comes from one of the sermons by the pastor who married him and baptized his children and with whom he keeps sincere close, personal, and political ties. At the same time, in the above video he says,
When these statements first came to my attention, it was at the beginning of my presidential campaign. I made it clear at the time that I strongly condemned his comments. But because Rev. Wright was on the verge of retirement, and because of my strong links to the Trinity faith community, where I married my wife and where my daughters were baptized, I did not think it appropriate to leave the church.
Which is it? He didn't hear it, if he had heard it he would have left the church, he heard it at the beginning of his campaign, he turned off the hearing aid, or what?

Obama clearly considers religious discourse important, and his own campaign style echoes the style of revivalist meetings.

It is important, then, that we learn just what ideology his religious affiliations expouse.

By the way, whatever happened to those fainting women?

UPDATE
Via commenter Gringo, A Candidate, His Minister and the Search for Faith
When Mr. Obama arrived at Harvard Law School later that year, where he fortified himself with recordings of Mr. Wright’s sermons, he was delivering stirring speeches as a student leader in the classic oratorical style of the black church.
No, he didn't turn off his hearing aid.

McCain's EIGHTH visit to Iraq

McCain makes unannounced trip to Iraq
Sen. John McCain, the Republican Party's presumptive nominee for president who has linked his political future to U.S. success in Iraq, was in Baghdad on Sunday for meetings with Iraqi and U.S. diplomatic and military officials, a U.S. government official said.
This is McCain's eighth visit, his first one as the Republican nominee. He's cementing relationships, and starting new ones,
"We were informed that John McCain landed in Iraq Sunday morning. A meeting will take place with the Iraqi government," said Ali al-Moussawi, an official in the prime minister's office.

McCain was to meet Sunday with Deputy Prime Minister Barham Saleh. Later in the day, he and Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, were to talk. It also was thought McCain would meet with al-Maliki.

McCain's weeklong trip also includes stops in Israel, Jordan, Britain and France.

He is expected to meet with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown for the first time, and French President Nicolas Sarkozy for the third time. He met and corresponded with Sarkozy both before and after the French president was elected. They last saw each other last summer.

McCain has relationships with every leader in Israel he plans to see, including Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, Defense Minister Ehud Barak and hawkish opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu.
The AP article, accompanied by a most unflattering photo of McCain, at least managed to mention,
A defiant supporter of the 2003 invasion and President Bush's troop increase last year, McCain is likely to focus in Iraq on the drop in sectarian violence and U.S. and civilian casualties since last summer.
Took them long enough.

Remind me now, how many times has Obama been to Iraq?

Pulling the okey-dokey

Pulling the Okey-Dokey, and Why Wright-Obama doesn't equal Hagee/Parsley-McCain

In this Seinfeld campaign season, Sister Toldjah explains why Wright-Obama doesn't equal Hagee/Parsley-McCain, in an excellent post: The left's silly attempts at morally equating Wright/Farrakhan/Hagee/Parsley
Any assertions that the associations between each of them respectively are the same are absurd, though, for reasons noted above. Both candidates are getting endorsements from other people in addition to Hagee and Farrakhan that they'd probably just rather see wither away quietly into the night, but Obama's relationship with Wright is more than just an "endorsement" - Obama has long been associated with Wright, admired him, and as I've talked about before, has sought counsel from him and has cited him as a source of inspiration for his second book and his 2004 keynote. He even consulted Wright on whether or not he should run for president. Farrakhan's endorsement of BO probably would have elicted barely more than a chuckle and an eyeroll from people if Wright himself had not previously praised him.
She also has the video of the Fox News interview:

Let's review here:
Obama has been
  • a member in good standing of that church since 1991
  • acquainted with the church since his community organizing days
  • contributing to Wright's Church
  • donating frequently
and
  • was married there by Wright
  • had his two daughters baptized there by Wright
Additionally, the title of his book, The Audacity of Hope, comes from one of Wright's own sermons
BUT in the interview he says that none of Wright's statements were statements "he had heard himself personally in the pews".

Which means what?

It means he's pulling a con, an okey-dokey
You all know the okey-dokey, when someone's trying to bamboozle you, when they're trying to hoodwink you?
Obama knew what his pastor was saying.

In an answer worthy of Clintonian dissembling, Obama claims that
The statements that Rev. Wright made that are the cause of this controversy were not statements I personally heard him preach while I sat in the pews of Trinity or heard him utter in private conversation
Major Garret asked him, "If you had known what he was saying, you would have quit the church", to which Obama replied, "If I had heard them repeated I would have quit".

It is impossible to believe that someone didn't know what the pastor of his church, a man with whom Obama has been in such close association that he refers to him in the above video as "almost an uncle", has been saying, preaching and writing for the past two decades. But Obama wants you to believe he never heard Wright say any such things.

As Ace said, he should have read the church bulletin.

The con is that, as Mona Charen points out,
I am coming to believe that Barack Obama is one of the greatest con artists we've seen. His entire campaign has been about "coming together," a post-racial consensus, etc. Any mention of his middle name was immediately condemned as ignorant fear-mongering. He has played the role of racial unifier with great skill and finesse.
If you are to trust at face value what Obama says, then Barack Obama is well on his way to becoming the political Candide
a youth whom Nature had endowed with a most sweet disposition. His face was the true index of his mind. He had a solid judgment joined to the most unaffected simplicity; and hence, I presume, he had his name of Candide.
Not only has Obama been ignorant of Wright's odious position, he's also saying he had no idea of how much money Rezko had raised for his campaign because "he had never asked for a political favor":
Trying to put his past with Antoin "Tony" Rezko behind him, presidential candidate Barack Obama on Friday said he never thought the nowindicted Chicago businessman would try to take advantage of him because his old friend had never asked for a political favor.

But in a 90-minute interview with Tribune reporters and editors, Obama disclosed that Rezko had raised more for Obama's earlier political campaigns than previously known, gathering as much as $250,000 for the first three offices he sought.

Obama also elaborated on previous statements about his private real estate transactions with Rezko, saying they were not simply mistakes of judgment because Rezko was under grand jury investigation at the time of their 2005 and 2006 dealings. "The mistake, by the way, was not just engaging in a transaction with Tony because he was having legal problems. The mistake was because he was a contributor and somebody who was involved in politics."
Barack's doing well in his dissembling, but I digress:
Obama rejected the suggestion that, by paying the full price for the lot, Rezko was enabling Obama to buy the house for $300,000 less than the initial asking price.

"Frankly I don't think he was doing me a favor," Obama said. "There was simply no connection between our purchase of the house, the price of the house and the purchase of the lot."
I am blinded by the brilliance. You can even say I'm baffled by the bullsh*t, too.
Faced with intensifying scrutiny as the Democratic primary season grinds on, Obama said voters should view his Rezko dealings as "a mistake in not seeing the potential conflicts of interest." But he added that voters should also "see somebody who is not engaged in any wrongdoing . . . and who they can trust."
It all comes down to the audacity of hoping they'll believe you (h/t Instapundit).

The distraction, and the real news

The distraction, that is, the not-news news: Clinton strategist says Obama 'can't win the general election'.

Well, did anyone expect a Clinton strategist to say otherwise? Something in the likes of, "Oh sure, Obama's going to clean our clock in the primary and coast into a 50-state landslide"?

Here's some news:
One of Obama's Earmarks Went to Hospital That Employs Michelle Obama

There's the hate preaching pastor; Victor Davis Hanson:
Each time the Rev. Wright’s latest clip is played, Obama is going to lose voters — unless he explains how and why such sentiments are not his own, and how and why he could attend such sermons without being ill at ease.
Confederate Yankee is posting on why Reverend Wright is wrong.

Rick Moran has another extensive post on why has been doing a lot of explaining about the company he has kept for the last 17 years or so: Rick goes into Obama's relationships with not only Reverend Wright, but with former Weather Underground member and unrepentant terrorist bomber William Ayers, with whom Obama has repeatedly appeared in forums, and Tony Rezko and his associates (Auchi, Alsammarae, others) and Obama's "drop-bys"
At every step Obama has sought to hide, to minimize, to dismiss his relationship with Rezko as a one sided affair – that of an eager Chicago fixer wanting to get close to an up and coming state senator. Instead, the picture that will almost certainly be revealed during Rezko’s trial is that Obama and Rezko were close associates with Rezko being a crucial part of Obama’s rise in politics while Obama for his part, aided Rezko in his business dealings.

How? By the time honored political tool known as "the drop by."

Suppose you are a property developer meeting with foreign businessmen trying to convince them to invest in your plan. Suddenly, a United States senator shows up at your meeting to greet the foreigners, do a little backslapping, and thus give legitimacy and "juice" to the developer making it easier for the foreigners to trust him. The senator is in and out in just a few minutes. But the impact of his visit is not lost on the foreign businessmen.
Rick was our guest on Tuesday and we discussed Obama and Rezko. You can listen to the podcast here. You probably want to read Obama Watch, Rezkorama, and The truth about Obama; the news services aren't highlighting the real story.

Echoes of the Halimi murder, Obama-Rezko, and other items

I had planned on going to New York this morning but something unexpected came up.

After that was over, I've been reading the blogs:

OBAMA-REZKO AND MEDIA IGNORANCE OF "THE CHICAGO WAY"
The lack of curiosity by the press about Obama’s connections to one of the most corrupt city governments in the United States should be one of the big media stories of this campaign. While it is true that Obama's connections to the Machine are not as extensive as many other politicians, I've got news for you Obama apologists; try running for any office in Chicago – local, state, or federal – and see how far you get without support from the regular Democrats.

The cult's anthem

Via Carolyn,
We Are The Ones Song, in English... and Spanish:

I don't know about you, but the name chanting, the repeating "Cambio, esperanza, hope, change", and the woman stating "he's almost like a reviver for a lot of people's souls", while Obama's voiceover saying, "We're the ones we've been waiting for" in the imperial "We", totally creeps me out.

But that's just me.

Ebay auction: Choose new middle name for Barack HUSSEIN Obama

Via Judith, someone's auctioning on ebay a new name for Obama,
Choose new middle name for Barack HUSSEIN Obama
CHOOSE NEW MIDDLE NAME FOR BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA

You are bidding on a framed genuine FAKE birth certificate of Barack Hussein Obama. Did I say that his middle name is Hussein? I did? Okay.

Here is the fun part. Because it is apparently against the rules to use the middle name of HUSSEIN, the winning bidder will have the opportunity to choose a new middle name to replace HUSSEIN. It will be inserted in the FAKE certificate. We can begin using the name, and then we won't have to worry about being arrested by the DemocRAT PC police for using the actual real name HUSSEIN.

Let's see how these might sound. Barack Milhous Obama. Barack Fitzgerald Obama. Barack Fidel Obama. Barack Wolfgang Obama. Barack Rodham Obama. It will be your choice. Be creative!

Won't it be nice to use his entire name again? You knew JFK and FDR. We don't want to have to call him B.O. do we? That stinks.

NOTE: does anyone doubt that Hillary had her surrogates leak the photo of Barack Hussein Obama in the Somali ceremonial outfit? It is not over. Hillary Rodham Clinton will not go away quietly. If she has to, she will burn the oil wells. Hillary is going to sabotage Barack Hussein Obama behind the scenes. Hillary will do anything to anyone at any time for power. Don't ever doubt that. The woman really is demonically possessed. She put up with public humiliation dished out by her husband that no self-respecting strong woman would ever find acceptable. She accepted it because she wanted power, had to ride the serial sexual predator's coattails, and believed she was destined to become the most powerful woman in history. If she can't sabotage B.O. and steal the nomination from him, she may well have a nervous breakdown. BULLETIN: it appears that Hillary is filing suit over the way delegates are chosen in Texas.
Let's see if it stays up.

Racism, explored and exploited from the UK

Siggy just brought this article to my attention:
Obama victory will prolong US racial divide, says British equality chief

Trevor Phillips, chairman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, claimed that the Democratic front-runner would ultimately disappoint the African-American community and dismissed the notion that he would be "the harbinger of a post-racial America" if he becomes the country’s first black President.
Let's take a brief look at this gentleman's occupation: he's "equality chief".

Would it be too harsh to say that he has a vested interest in perpetuating inequality, since otherwise there would be no point for his high-placed position in the bureaucracy?

Phillips believes that

guilt over transatlantic slavery was behind Mr Obama’s support from middle class whites
Let's ignore, for the purposes of this post, that Barak Obama's own mother is a middle class white. I don't expect Phillips considered this fact when making his assertions.

The United States waged the most deadly war in its history to abolish slavery. The struggle for human rights in the United States continues to this day to ensure that every person has equal rights under the law.

Additionally, most of the middle class whites in the USA are descendants of people who immigrated from other countries AFTER the emancipation proclamation, signed by Abraham Lincoln in 1863, or whose ancestors had arrived shortly before the Civil War, for instance, the Irish fleeing the potato famine of 1847.

None of those whites were in any kind of situation to own much property, never mind property in slave states, much less slaves.

So I'd like to ask Phillips, why should middle class whites feel any guilt over transatlantic slavery? How many middle class whites have even one ancestor who owned a plantation or worked in a trade associated with the transatlantic slavery trade?

Are there more important issues than "middle class white guilt over transatlantic slavery" to those very same middle class white prospective voters in this year's Presidential campaign?

Phillips continues,

"If Obama can succeed, then maybe they can imagine that [Martin Luther] King's post-racial nirvana has arrived. A vote for Obama is a pain-free negation of their own racism. So long as they don't have to live next door to him; Obama has yet to win convincingly in white districts adjacent to black communities," he wrote.
Record numbers of voters of every ethnic background are participating in the Democrat primaries and caucases, most of them white. Does Phillips sincerely believe they would not want to live next door to Obama but would gladly have him as Commander in Chief?

In Phillips's mind, Bill Cosby is a "sad and lonely figure". Cosby has laughed his way to the bank by being Bill Cosby, but let's not tell the "equality chief".

The "equality chief" believes that ultra-successful people like Bill Cosby and Oprah get there by "not making an issue of historical racism if their own race is not used against them". Phillips probably didn't have cable TV the day Oprah grilled Mark Furman over the coals during the OJ Simpson trial.

Of course, being in charge of an Equality and Human Rights Commission blinds you to the achievements any member of any minority may attain out of their own merit. The blacks who achieve, according to Phillips, do so only through cashing in on white guilt,

Mr Phillips said that there was no "British Obama" in part because the black British community was much smaller and therefore less likely to produce such high-achievers, and because "Black Britons can't bring centuries of white guilt to bear with the devastating impact that African-Americans have done for two generations?.
What does that mean, that to the "equality chief", a black Presidential candidate is one sign of "devastating impact"?

Perhaps Phillips is embarrassed. Alvaro Vargas Llosa, writing at The New Republic (that arm of the vast right wing conspiracy),
In Europe, one senses a quiet shame. The left, which loves to criticize the Unites States for its imperial foreign policy and its discrimination against blacks and Hispanics, is not really saluting Obama. There have been few gushing articles in Italy's La Repubblica or France's Le Monde. And by sending the message that it might be ready to elect an African-American, a part of mainstream America is showing the industrialized world a more open-minded attitude than the United States usually gets credit for. This is particularly embarrassing in socialist Europe. Contrast the attitude of those white Americans who are ready for a President Obama with the conditions that have led France's North African immigrants to riot on the outskirts of Paris. And have the Scandinavian countries ever generated anything comparable to Obama among the minorities who are tended to so generously as long as they don't make too much noise?
As long as he's secure his job, it probably doesn't matter.

UPDATE
Here's Erik Svane's letter to the IHT from June 20, 1997
As I wrote in letters to the editor to the Washington Post and the IHT 10 years ago (where it says "the/American president" below, I wrote "Clinton" at the time):

I should like to know on behalf of whom, exactly, America's president should apologize over slavery. I myself, like the majority of today's U.S. population, am descended from immigrants who arrived after the turn of the 20th century and therefore have nothing to do with the treatment of blacks on the plantations (or that of Indians on the plains, for that matter).

As for Americans living at the time slavery existed, over twice as many whites lived in states where slavery was illegal and where it had been so, for the most part, since before the French Revolution. The president can hardly apologize for the South either, since most whites even there — two thirds of them, to be precise — did not own a single slave.

Maybe the president should apologize for the planters and slaveholders? But they inherited the system they dwelled in, and although they certainly did little if anything to change it, in what way are they more guilty than the English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, and other European nationals who introduced it in all their colonies (including, of course, the future United States) and whose only reason for not introducing it onto the European continent proper (as well as the North of the future U.S., needless to say) was the absence of a propitious climate?

And how, finally, are the above-mentioned whites more guilty than the African tribes whose warriors raided neighboring villages to sell their enemies to the Europeans?

What's in a name?

People are debating whether or not it is correct to refer to Obama as Barack Hussein Obama.

Hot Air has the video.

Cunningham (who by the way I'd never heard of until this morning) correctly mentions the business dealings with Rezko (see yesterday's post), and some other allegations that should be discussed and investigated.

Obama has also made his position clear on disarming America; Doug Ross has the video (h/t Larwyn):

...I will cut investments in unproven [sic] missile defense systems...
...I will not weaponize space...
...I will slow development of Future Combat Systems...
...and I will institute a "Defense Priorities Board" to [prevent] unnecessary spending...
...I will set a goal of a world without nuclear weapons...
...and to seek that goal, I will not develop nuclear weapons...
...I will seek a global ban on the development of fissile material...
...and I will negotiate with Russia to take our ICBMs off hair-trigger alert...
...and to achieve deep cuts in our nuclear arsenals...
These are matters of national security. The future of our country depends on them. By the way, Gerard is rather suspicious of that video.

Video notwithstanding, Doug also links to Kudlow's list of Obama's voting record:
* Voted against extending the Bush tax cuts on capital gains and dividends.

* Voted against permanently repealing the Death Tax. (Called the cuts a "Paris Hilton" tax break for "billionaire heirs and heiresses")

* Voted against CAFTA.

* Voted YES on raising the minimum wage to $7.25 rather than $6.25.

* Opposed the lifting of $0.54 per gallon tariff on cheaper Brazillian ethanol. Said, "ethanol imports are neither necessary nor a practical response to current gasoline prices."

* Voted against the bankruptcy abuse bill.

* Opposes privatizing Social Security

* Voted against drilling in ANWR.

* Voted against confirmation of Sam Alito AND John Roberts as chief justice.

* Voted against extending the PATRIOT Act's wiretap provision.

* Opposed any bans on partial birth abortions.
There's enough in there to give plenty of pause to any non-liberal.

Instead, what is the outrage about?

Cunningham called Obama, Barak Hussein Obama. Does it constitute pandering to fear and emotion?

Maybe.

But we would be better served if we started (finally) discussing what it is Obama stands for, instead of what his name implies or doesn't, or whether his wife made him quit smoking.

The Obama-Rezko-Auchi-Saddam link

I've spent most of the day attending to things other than the internet and blogging, but right before this morning's podcast Siggy brought to my attention this excellent post from Ed Morrissey,
Did Saddam Figure's Millions Influence Obama?
The Times of London follows the money in the journalistic tradition of Watergate and finds a strange connection between Tony Rezko, Barack Obama, and Nadhmi Auchi. The latter, one of Britain's richest men, has a long history of shady financial dealings as well as numerous connections to Saddam Hussein, who he helped to power. According to the Times, Auchi sent a lot of money to Rezko just before his wife bought property adjacent to the Obamas in a land deal that has already raised a lot of eyebrows.
The land deal involved a parcel of land that could only be accessed through the Obama property, therefore making it useless to anyone other than the Obamas.

The Times article is titled Mansion 'mistake' piles the pressure on Barack Obama, and, as Flopping Aces puts it,
How the three intertwine is by the fact that Rezko was pretty much owned by Mr. Auchi
Auchi is the thirteenth-richest man in Britain. So much for populism.

Rick Moran explains
Auchi is emerging as a key figure in the corruption trial of Rezko and also played a part in one of Rezko's attempts to exploit his relationship with Obama. Obama denies he ever did any favors for Rezko or his associates but the crooked Obama fundraiser told prosecutors that after Auchi gave him another "loan," he asked Obama to intervene with the State Department in order to get a visa for Auchi who was being denied entry into the US
And who is Auchi?
First of all, his business dealings make Rezko’s kickback schemes for political contributions look like the minor leagues of sleaze. Auchi had a hand in the biggest political and corporate scandal in post war Europe, the so-called "Elf Affair" where $2 billion francs up and disappeared from the French state oil company Elf.
Auchi was a long-time Saddam Hussein supporter. There's a lot more on Rezko and Auchi at Rick's post.

There's even a Rezkowatch blog.

What I don't understand is why this is not getting the publicity the Obama with the silly hat photos got yesterday. The media will bury this story even after Rezko gets convicted.

As Media Lizzy is mentioning in her podcast right now, Obama does not have the transparency issue that Hillary has, even considering this shady deal.

Will this become a non-issue? Very likely.

Or will it be Mansiongate?

We'll see what part the bloggers will play.

The other day my friend Paul Budline and I were discussing the fainting for Obama phenomenom and all the cult-like devotion, and Paul's now asking, "What Would Barack Do?"

To read Paul's questions go to my article at the Star Ledger's NJ Voices.
