US removes uranium from Iraq

From Associated Press, that arm of the vast right wing conspiracy:
US removes uranium from Iraq.

Let's pay attention to that: The United States military have removed
550 metric tons of "yellowcake" - the seed material for higher-grade nuclear enrichment
which was stored at the nuclear facility in Tuwaitha, Iraq, some 12 miles south of Baghdad.

Again:
  • Saddam Hussein had a nuclear program
  • At the Tuwaitha nuclear complex just south of Baghdad
  • Which included 550 metric tons (over 1.2 million pounds) of "yellowcake", or concentrated uranium
  • And multiple devices that could be used in a nuclear weapon
The AP does not say alleged nuclear program. It does not add "according to military experts." It simply says "Saddam Hussein's nuclear program."
Other important points:
1. The yellowcake removed is the last mayor remnant of Saddam's nuclear program. There was more.
2. The military had removed earlier this year four devices for controlled radiation exposure which "contain elements of high radioactivity that could potentially be used in a weapon".
3. The yellowcake was sold to Cameco, which may have been involved in the Oil-For-Food scam, and is a company in which Soros Fund Management LLC owns a substantial portion.

It Must Suck Being Joe Wilson Today - Joe, you’ve been punk'd!

In other news, Iraqis lead final purge of Al-Qaeda, Islamism is discredited, and We're winning this War on Terror.

The Carnival of Latin America and the Caribbean will be up in a couple of hours. Bear with me - with the rescue of the Colombian hostages, it's going to be huge!

Noon roundup: WaPo realizes Bush didn't lie, the al-Khaiwani verdict, and more

The Anchoress has an excellent post, WaPo: Bush "substantiated by intelligence", where she quotes from this article, 'Bush Lied'? If Only It Were That Simple
On Iraq's nuclear weapons program? The president's statements "were generally substantiated by intelligence community estimates."

On biological weapons, production capability and those infamous mobile laboratories? The president's statements "were substantiated by intelligence information."

On chemical weapons, then? "Substantiated by intelligence information."

On weapons of mass destruction overall (a separate section of the intelligence committee report)? "Generally substantiated by intelligence information." Delivery vehicles such as ballistic missiles? "Generally substantiated by available intelligence." Unmanned aerial vehicles that could be used to deliver WMDs? "Generally substantiated by intelligence information."

As you read through the report, you begin to think maybe you've mistakenly picked up the minority dissent. But, no, this is the Rockefeller indictment. So, you think, the smoking gun must appear in the section on Bush's claims about Saddam Hussein's alleged ties to terrorism.

But statements regarding Iraq's support for terrorist groups other than al-Qaeda "were substantiated by intelligence information." Statements that Iraq provided safe haven for Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and other terrorists with ties to al-Qaeda "were substantiated by the intelligence assessments," and statements regarding Iraq's contacts with al-Qaeda "were substantiated by intelligence information." The report is left to complain about "implications" and statements that "left the impression" that those contacts led to substantive Iraqi cooperation.
The bottom line:
But the phony "Bush lied" story line distracts from the biggest prewar failure: the fact that so much of the intelligence upon which Bush and Rockefeller and everyone else relied turned out to be tragically, catastrophically wrong.
THAT is the real issue.

Top Talent Scout for Obama Tied to Subprime Lender. Who sent him?

Richard Fernandez comments on growth of the Obama-Rezko connection and quotes from Salon,
After law school, Obama went to work for the firm of Davis Miner Barnhill & Galland. During Rezko's stint in ghetto rehab, Davis Miner represented three community groups in partnership with Rezmar. Through them, the law firm helped Rezko obtain $43 million in government funds.

At last week's debate in South Carolina, Hillary Clinton stung Obama for "representing your contributor, Rezko, in his slum-landlord business in inner-city Chicago."

If Clinton was trying to stick Rezko on Obama, that was the wrong line of attack. At Davis Miner, Obama did a total of five hours of legal work for Rezko, under the supervision of more-experienced attorneys. Obama didn't really become tight with Rezko until he ran for the state Senate, in 1995. Rezko, who can spot a comer, was first in line with a check. The day the campaign started, Obama received $2,000 from two of Rezko's fast-food businesses. Eight years later, when Obama was campaigning for the U.S. Senate, Rezko hosted a fundraiser at his suburban mansion.
Richard points out that
Apart from being a slum landlord, Rezko has also been accused of trying to take control of a $40B Illinois teacher's pension fund so that he could loot it.

The world of Chicago politics and international intrigue seems to loop around. Not only was Tony Rezko tight with former Saddam moneyman Nahdmi Auchi, guess who put up bail money for the pizza magnate? Aiham Alsammarae.

The Chicago Sun Times reports:

A former Iraqi official and ex-international fugitive helped spring Tony Rezko from jail earlier this month, putting up homes that comprise nearly one-third of the $8.5 million in property and cash securing Rezko's bail, the Chicago Sun-Times has learned.

The three homes belonging to former Iraqi Electricity Minister Aiham Alsammarae — a dual U.S.-Iraqi citizen who broke out of a Baghdad jail in 2006 — are part of a long list made public in Rezko's case Friday following a Sun-Times request.

Al Qaeda "pranks", and not

ABC News has this report, Al Qaeda Supporters' Tape to Call for Use of WMDs
"There have been several reports that al Qaeda will release a new message calling for the use of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) against civilians," FBI spokesman Richard Kolko told ABC News in an e-mail.

"Although there have been similar messages in the past, the FBI and [Department of Homeland Security] have no intelligence of any specific plot or indication of a threat to the U.S.," the e-mail said. "The FBI and U.S. intelligence community will review the message for any intelligence value."
The video in question appears to have been put together by jihadi supporter(s) and is already available on a YouTube channel devoted to spreading al Qaeda propaganda.

Counterterrorism blog states the video is
meandering, boring, and difficult to follow--and it certainly was not the product of Al-Qaida.
CT Blog points at the possiblity of a prank. Jawa is not alarmed but remains cautious to the possibility that the video may point to a bacteriological attack on September 2008.

However, in Iraq a new al-Qaeda cell has been created for Iraqis under 16 years old; the cell is named "The Youths of Heaven". And that is no prank. (h/t the Baron)

Associated Press Truth Deficit Disorder

A couple of years ago I coined the term Associated Press Deficit Disorder (APDD)
the innatention of Associated Press and other news agencies to the actual words said by a person who doesn't fit what AP wants to hear.
Add to that Associated Press Truth Deficit Disorder, since AP is now into full fabrication mode: Gateway Pundit has the details, Busted!!... Iraqi Press Denies AP Report On Ayatollah Sistani
Iraqi Press: Sistani DID NOT issue a fatwa declaring it OK to kill US Soldiers!

Yesterday, the Associated Press released a shocking report about how moderate Ayatollah Ali Sistani was "quietly issuing religious edicts declaring that armed resistance against U.S.-led foreign troops was permissible."

This was completely out of character with the previous fatwas and religious edicts by the moderate and popular Iraqi Ayatollah.

Today, Iraqi Nibras Kazimi at Talisman Gate, who has met Ayatollah Sistani before, countered the AP report.
Go to Gateway Pundit for links and details. In the meantime, Doug Ross has the sign:

Al-Qaida No. 2 says 9/11 theory propagated by Iran

Nothing is going to convince the truthers, but here it goes:
Al-Qaida No. 2 says 9/11 theory propagated by Iran
Osama bin Laden's chief deputy on Tuesday denied a theory that Israel carried out the Sept. 11 attacks and blamed Iran and Shiite Hezbollah for spreading the idea to discredit the Sunni al-Qaida's strike against the U.S.
...
One of the questioners asked about the theory that has circulated in the Middle East and elsewhere that Israel was behind the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Al-Zawahri accused Hezbollah's Al-Manar television of starting the rumor.

"The purpose of this lie is clear — (to suggest) that there are no heroes among the Sunnis who can hurt America as no else did in history. Iranian media snapped up this lie and repeated it," he said.
Of course, Al-Zawahri has theories of his own:
"Iran's aim here is also clear - to cover up its involvement with America in invading the homes of Muslims in Afghanistan and Iraq," he said.
According to him, the Crusaders and the Iranians are working together:
Answering questions about Iraq in Tuesday's tape, al-Zawahri said the insurgent umbrella group led by al-Qaida, called the Islamic Nation of Iraq, is "the primary force opposing the Crusaders and challenging Iranian ambitions" in Iraq, he said, referring to the Americans.

As he often does in his messages, al-Zawahri denounced the "Crusader invasion" of Iraq, but in Tuesday's tape he paired it with a mention of "Iranian complicity" or "Iranian agents."
He didn't leave out global warming,
He predicted that global warming would "make the world more sympathetic to and understanding of the Muslims' jihad against the aggressor America."
Still,
In the latest tape, al-Zawahri was also asked if the terror group had further plans to attack Western countries that participated in the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and subsequent war.

"My answer is: Yes! We think that any country that has joined aggression on Muslims must be deterred," he replied.
Was the question and answer session replies done by a committe? Maybe:
Queries were submitted on the main Islamist Web site until the cutoff date of Jan. 16.
Took him three months to reply.

Today's must-read: Saddam and al-Qaeda

At American Thinker, via Larwyn, Debra Baker's article, Saddam and al-Qaeda
  • In Extract 12 on page 16 of the Pentagon papers, there is another memorandum that was drafted in Saddam's office which specifically shows that Saddam was directly financing and training the EIJ
  • captured Iraqi archives reveal that Saddam was training Arab fighters (non-Iraqi) in Iraqi training camps more than a decade prior to Operation Desert Storm (1991).
  • Saddam provided support to terrorists that only a state could provide by issuing passports to known terrorists so they could move about freely.

On Saddam’s Order

On Saddam's Order
The Iraqi tyrant didn't "just" aid anti-American terrorist groups; he explicitly ordered them to attack.
What is not debatable, based on the Iraqi Perspectives Project, is that Saddam Hussein's regime funded, trained, and assisted terrorist groups (including al-Qaeda proxies), and sometimes actually ordered them to attack American citizens, American interests, and American allies. To compound the danger, Saddam Hussein's Iraq was simultaneously using its intelligence and security apparatus to plot and conduct terror attacks of its own.
The article lists the groups that Saddam's regime funded, trained, and assisted:
  • "Renewal and Jihad Organization"
  • Egyptian Islamic Jihad (al-Qaeda second-in-command Ayman al-Zawahiri's group, which merged with Osama bin Laden's terrorists to form al-Qaeda)
  • The Islamic Scholars Group in Pakistan
  • Pakistan Scholars Group
  • "Army of Muhammad" that it knew to be loyal to Osama bin Laden
A September 2001 document mentions Saddam's efforts "make common cause" with a number of Islamic radical groups in Kuwait, including a Shiite group. Another document mentions a Sri Lankan group that volunteered to carry out suicide bombings on Saddam's orders during the first Gulf war. Additional internal memos show Iraqi officials reporting to one another that Hamas was willing through the 1990s to conduct suicide attacks against Americans on behalf of Saddam’s Iraq. These memos also listed Abu Abbas, the notorious Palestinian terrorist, as another man willing to lead his forces for Saddam in attacks against Americans.
Additionally,
The report details the regime's production of suicide vests, IEDs, and car bombs for plots that included targets in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Saddam's embassies in these countries were warehouses for missile launchers, plastic explosives, TNT, Kalashnikovs, booby-trapped suitcases, and grenades. These tools were all available to a regime that had internal orders to attack American civilians, military members, bases, embassies, and ships.
The report where Mark Eichenlaub found all this information is five volumes long. What journalist out there is taking the time to comb through this information, rather than continue to believe that Saddam's Iraq was harmless country that presented no threat to anyone?

The Saddam-Al Qaeda Links: In Photos and Video

Washington Post Duped Instead of D.U.P.E.S. (UPDATE: WaPo Purposeful Dupe)

Via Dan, Report Details Saddam's Terrorist Ties
The report also undercuts the claim made by many on the left and many
at the CIA that Saddam, as a national socialist, was incapable of
supporting or collaborating with the Islamist al Qaeda. The report concludes
that instead Iraq's relationship with Osama bin Laden's organization
was similar to the relationship between the rival Colombian cocaine
cartels in the 1990s. Both were rivals in some sense for market share, but
also allies when it came to expanding the size of the overall market.

The Pentagon study finds, "Recognizing Iraq as a second, or parallel,
'terror cartel' that was simultaneously threatened by and somewhat
aligned with its rival helps to explain the evidence emerging from the
detritus of Saddam's regime."

Reviewing Matamoros

When I was at CPAC I had a chance to talk to the guys at the Mastys Comix booth about their new comic book, Matamoros

As you can read from the their website, the story was developed by
John Cox is a painter, cartoonist, and illustrator for hire. He’s the illustrator of the wildly popular Cox & Forkum political cartoon series and also maintains a portfolio of his work at his John Cox Art website. John pencilled, inked and lettered the inaugural of Matamoros. Look for his work again in Issue #2!

Darius LaMonica is a co-writer and co-developer of the Matamoros comic book. A former engineer, he’s published science fiction and first entered the blogosphere several years ago with the FireTariqRamadan blog.

Sleet and Darius are long-time friends. Sleet is the co-writer and co-developer of the Matamoros comic book and cursed even more than Chuck Sobietti on the day Captain America died.
The comic book stars Chuck Sobietti, four-time Purple Heart war hero, who at the start of the story has been severely maimed by an Iranian-made IED while in action in Iraq.

Chuck has more than a passing resemblance to the Six Million Dollar Man of the seventies, and emulates Captain America. His nemesis are Jihadists, not Nazis. Of course, the storyline bucks the trend in our politically-correct world, where entire countries are being pressured to not offend anyone deriding jihadists.

Additionally, the comic book is guaranteed to generate controversy, since it implies that a vigilante would "take care" of the problem. It will take more than that.

However, I was fascinated by the story, and loved the style of the illustrations (some clearly inspired by "300"). I look forward to the next installment of the adventures of Chuck Sobietti.

More than a comic book, it is a graphic novel that should generate discussion. I highly recommend it.

Today FrontPage interviews Darius LaMonica:
And our use of this word in the title has nothing to do with a desire to start some type of religious war. I've already dealt with fools raising this straw man against the book. They're completing missing the point of the title, which is to show that we've got to get inside the heads of today's jihadists to determine their motivation for attempting to restart a global jihad. These creeps are already talking about the "tragedy of Andalusia (Muslim Spain)" and how they want it back. And they're not basing these threats on some "root cause" of poverty - they're basing it on their notion that they have a religious duty to re-conquer any areas that once were held by the Caliphate. This is the same basis for their desire to conquer Israel and the people in Spain who voted Jose Aznar out of office had better realize that if Israel falls to radical Islam, Spain is going to be the next country in the jihadists' crosshairs.
Also,
FP: What do you hope to achieve with your comic book and with America's first anti-jihadist comic book hero?

LaMonica: I'd really like two things to happen with the book.

First, I'd like the readers to get interested in "World War IV" as Norman Podhoretz calls the current conflict. We've added some little "clues" in the book - the historical references with Sobietti's name, a panel that references "asymmetric warfare," etc. - which add to the plot.

Second, we really want the men and women in uniform to see one pop cultural artifact that's showing them as valorous in their fight against Islamofascism. The highlight of this book for me was sending some copies to a few soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. If they can get fifteen minutes of entertainment out of the book and know that they're fighting a true enemy of civilization then I'll consider the book a rousing success.
It'll be interesting to see if the blogs commenting at the Memeorandum link have bothered to read it.

They should.

You can buy it here.

Hollywood A-List celebrity endorses staying in Iraq

Staying to Help in Iraq
We have finally reached a point where humanitarian assistance, from us and others, can have an impact.

Angelina Jolie says so.

Why? Because she listened to Gen. Petraeus:
In Baghdad, I spoke with Army Gen. David Petraeus about UNHCR's need for security information and protection for its staff as they re-enter Iraq, and I am pleased that he has offered that support. General Petraeus also told me he would support new efforts to address the humanitarian crisis "to the maximum extent possible" -- which leaves me hopeful that more progress can be made.
Michael Goldfarb has a suggestion to the presidential candidates:
She also asks each of the presidential candidates "to announce a comprehensive refugee plan with a specific timeline and budget as part of their Iraq strategy." McCain should be first in line to offer such a plan. The case for sustaining the U.S. presence there has always been based, in part, on the responsibility this country has to the people of Iraq. Let Obama explain how he's going to assure the safe return of refugees in tandem with a withdrawal of U.S. forces.
Warner Todd Hudson wonders what the Left's reaction would be if Obama were to embrace Angelina's line.

Next thing you know, celebs will be saying good things about George Bush.

Why is the media ignoring the Iraqi reconciliation law?

Last week I posted that Iraw had passed a major reconciliation law. The media mostly ignored this.

Via Instapundit, two posts on Iraq:

The first one, from Strategy Page, Reinforcing Failure points to the role of the Iraqis themselves in defeating al-Qaeda, and on the role of the media:
Apparently the Taliban missed the part where al Qaeda got run out of Iraq, by Iraqis, because of the large number of civilians killed by terrorist bombs.
...
This years "Spring Offensive" will apparently feature more suicide bombs, and attempts to manipulate the Western media (to pressure Western governments to withdraw troops from Afghanistan).
The second one, from Commentary, Big News from Baghdad, explains why the reconciliation law is important:
We are now seeing extraordinary security gains from the last year translate into both political reconciliation and legislative progress. Within the last week the Iraqi parliament passed key laws having to do with provincial elections (the law devolves power to the local level in a decentralization system that is groundbreaking for the region), the distribution of resources, and amnesty. And those laws follow ones passed in recent months having to do with pensions, investment, and de-Ba'athification.

American Ambassador Ryan Crocker told Fred Barnes of The Weekly Standard that "the whole motivating factor" beyond the legislation was "reconciliation, not retribution." This is "remarkably different" from six months ago, according to the widely respected, straight-talking Crocker.
What does it mean in regards to the 2008 US Presidential elections, then?
Progress in Iraq means life is getting progressively more difficult for Democrats and their two presidential front-runners, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Having strongly opposed the surge, Obama and Clinton have been forced by events to concede that security progress has been made. But until now they have insisted that the surge is a failure because we're not seeing political progress. That claim is now being shattered.

Soon Obama and Clinton will have no argument left to justify their position on Iraq. It will become increasingly clear that they are committed to leaving Iraq simply because they are committed to leaving Iraq, regardless of the awful consequences that would follow. It is an amazing thing to witness: two leading presidential candidates who are committed to engineering an American retreat, which would lead to an American defeat, despite the progress we are making on every conceivable front.

At the end of the day, this position will hurt Democrats badly, because their position will hurt America badly.
That explains why the media aren't about to feature the new law and Iraqi budget with any of the importance it deserves.

The Taliban's depths of depravity

One may think that the Taliban are a distant threat, that they're on the wane, and on and on, but the evil of the Taliban is alive and well.

Jawa Report's post on Most Shocking Video Ever: 12 Year Old Taliban Boy Beheads Man. Pray for the child in that video.

Now, I haven't watched the video because,
How bad are the Taliban? I thought I had seen horrible videos produced by al Qaeda, the Taliban, and other Islamist organizations. I'd seen the depth of their depravity when they beheaded Daniel Pearl. Experienced what I thought was the highest form of righteous indignation possible when they murdered dozens of other hostages. Felt like I knew what wrath was.

None of it even comes close. The images we posted earlier were bad. Add video and sound of a child---a child--slowly hacking away at a man's head while he lives on.....no words can describe it.

Strongest possible content warning: Proceed with extreme caution!

It's so bad that there was some debate amongst ourselves whether to show it or not.
When the Jawa guys tell you that, you better believe it.

The video was made by the Taleban themselves, who also videotaped themselves burning hostages alive. Muslim hostages.

Also at Jawa, there are now 5 convictions on the plot to behead a Muslim veteran of the Iraq war. of course, they wanted to film the beheading.

Meanwhile in NYC, far from reality, the NY Times gets its knickers in a bunch because US blinfolded prisoners in Iraq.
