The Colombian hostage rescue video
Five people emailed me the video filmed by Colombian security forces during their rescue of Ingrid Betancourt, Marc Gonsalves, Thomas Howes, Keith Stansell and the eleven other hostages:
My friend Steven posted this video, A Trip Across Israel - as you can see,
This video documents a drive across the entire width of Israel from the West Bank wall to the Mediterranean Sea. The point is to illustrate how small and intrinsically vulnerable it is.
What best way to start the weekend than to listen to Wednesday's podcast - my special guest was the very handsome and talented Carlos Eire, along with the equally handsome and talented Val Prieto and Siggy (who I assume is handsome, since I've never actually seen him, but who is nonetheless talented).
This would be a great weekend to read Waiting for Snow in Havana, Carlos's magnificent memoir:
Recently I've been doing the Shimmy, but after one would do well to have The flamenco mistress as a role model for women of a certain age, or maybe even a little older...
I beg to differ, Fausta. The redneck would double-tap the terrorist, keep his gun out and ready to fire until his wife pulled out her own weapon (just in case the SOB had friends), then reload while she covered him.
Iraq is filled with children, more than what you'll see in the US. Despite the troubles, kids are always laughing, playing and generally seem healthy. These kids were playing soccer on the street and came over to try handshakes they have seen on television with the soldiers.
Your lights are on, but youre not home Your mind is not your own Your heart sweats, your body shakes Another kiss is what it takes
You cant sleep, you cant eat Theres no doubt, youre in deep Your throat is tight, you cant breathe Another kiss is all you need
Whoa, you like to think that youre immune to the stuff, oh Yeah
Its closer to the truth to say you cant get enough, you Know youre
Gonna have to face it, youre addicted to love
You see the signs, but you cant read Youre runnin at a different speed You heart beats in double time Another kiss and youll be mine, a one track mind
You cant be saved Oblivion is all you crave If theres some left for you You dont mind if you do
Whoa, you like to think that youre immune to the stuff, oh Yeah
Its closer to the truth to say you cant get enough, you Know youre
Gonna have to face it, youre addicted to love
Might as well face it, youre addicted to love Might as well face it, youre addicted to love Might as well face it, youre addicted to love Might as well face it, youre addicted to love Might as well face it, youre addicted to love
Guitar solo (once around)
Your lights are on, but youre not home Your will is not your own Youre heart sweats and teeth grind Another kiss and youll be mine
Whoa, you like to think that youre immune to the stuff, oh Yeah
Its closer to the truth to say you cant get enough, you Know youre
Gonna have to face it, youre addicted to love
Might as well face it, youre addicted to love
And back in the day I wore one of those black dresses.
and the one I really like, Time to Say Good-Bye, which he sang with his heart. I watched it a couple of times and cried each time (even when I don't like tenors!).
Give the guy some orthodontia, a few acting lessons, an Armani suit, and he's a star!
And so, just like all those inane sit-coms, righteous courtroom dramas, and so-called who-done-its of televisionland, "House" is stridently predictable--or, at least, the plot is. What is unpredictable about "House" is the eponymous Dr. House himself, the world's leading infectious-disease diagnostician--who is also a motorcycle-riding Vicodin addict and all-around asshole whose ferocity is only surpassed by his acerbity. In fact, every word that passes through House's lips is dripping with sarcasm. The effort the show's writers must expend making sure the tenor of House's dialogue is arch every moment he's on screen is staggering. A few delicious House-isms:
"Loss of free will. I like it. Maybe we can get Thomas Aquinas in for a consult."
"Arrogance has to be earned. Tell me what you've done to earn yours."
I like that last one enough to use it for today's Twitter.
I wonder what acerbic line Doc would come up if he saw this but here are some houseisms: Time to add him to the list
I never thought I could feel this way And I've got to say that I just don't get it. I don't know where we went wrong, But the feeling's gone And I just can't get it back.
