Reverend Wright
Joe Klein has an excellent point on this article, Rev. Wright Calls Criticism of Sermons 'Attack on Black Church'"
Yes, as many have pointed out, Martin Luther King Jr. gave some angry, angry sermons--especially about the obscenity of the war in Vietnam--but for Wright to say the attacks on him are an attack on the black church is to offer a straitened and solipsistic view of that grand institution. Black liberation theology is not the black church.I was just discussing with Jazz Shaw whether Obama would disavow Rev. Wright, and we both agreed he won't. As Jazz put it,
No matter how much he "denounces" etc. it will never be enough for his detractors on the right and it won't matter for his supporters, so why bother?Roger has the video:

The key phrase in all of this is "black church."
First and most significant: If a church is racially exclusive, or panders to the prejudices of a single race, it cannot be Christian. Christ Himself commanded the Apostles to "Go and teach all nations," the most inclusive imaginable command to spread the Word.
Second, the phrase "black church" is a smarmy defense against criticism. It preemptively characterizes every critic as a putative racist. This will be the response to anyone who dares to imply that Barack Obama might have absorbed hostile attitudes toward whites from Wright's rantings.
Identity politics and race-baiting have always been nauseating, but Jeremiah Wright has brought them to a new low.
After generations of ingrained entitlement, fellows like Wright have built up a lifestyle of tearing people down. I for one, am damn tired of it.
Obama's clock is ticking now...if he doesn't stand up and do the "Presidential" thing - send Wright and his hateful rhetoric packing - then he will lose the nomination.
And you KNOW he won't - his "brother" is more important than his country. Therein lies the rub...
