WOW... in 1991 my wife and I saw Macbeth at the Globe Theater in London (not the original which burned, but the recreated one right down to the thatch roof). The play was the "modern" version with dueling with rocks clicking together for swords, modern chairs for thrones etc. Totally delightful and a thrill to have been there.
That is wonderful, GM. The last time I was in England the Globe was not finished yet.
Gee, Patrick Stewart as MacBeth, too old, too bald and hasn't had the physical presence to represent a 11th Century Scottish condotierri since he played Guenevere's father, King Leondegrance in John Boorman's Excalibur.
But I certainly wish I could have seen Hellen Mirren's and Nicol Williamson's MacBeth.
Pat, if you have seen him on this play, I'll have to wait until I see him to have an opinion.
But if you have never seen Patrick Stewart on stage, you don't know what you're missing because he's a force of nature on stage (and not on film or TV).
I saw him in England at least twenty years ago so obviously that doesn't count. And much later I saw him repetory with the Royal Shakespeare Company a few years ago. But I'll stand by at least my last reason in that he simply doesn't have the physical presence to be a believable MacBeth anymore even though I found that he is 5'10."
I've always thought of him, MacBeth, as the polar opposite to Shakespeare's wily and courageous Richard III. While the physically imposing MacBeth was not so wily but made up for his lack of intelligence in courage and brute aggression. MacBeth never had a tiny guy's presence, energy and intelligence.
Gasp! Crash! Faint! Did you hear me hit the floor up there in NJ?

I saw it Thursday night, before I went I was skeptical (not because of Stewart but because of the modernization). But now that I saw it I can tell you it was INcredible
BTW I would love to see him do Lear
