Hillary out to show her likeability, and the best political putdowns

Two stories not totally unrelated:
New Clinton campaign out to show her likability

The woman's been in the national public eye for twelve years and none of us have noticed how likeable she is, so now we need to be told.

Where is Winston Churchill when we need him?

From Pericles to Obama
Thursday's Democratic debate added to a long and noble tradition of poltical putdowns
British Prime Minister Winston Churchill is said to have been drinking at a party when he bumped into Bessie Braddock, a prudish political opponent. "Mr. Churchill, you are drunk," Braddock said.

"And Bessie, you are ugly," Churchill said. And then, after a pause, he added: "I'll be sober in the morning."
More blogging later.

A noblewoman once said to Churchill, "Sir, if you were my husband, I would poison your drink."

Churchill replied, "Madam, if you were my wife, I would drink it."

On another occasion, George Bernard Shaw sent two theater tickets for the opening night of his latest play to Churchill, and enclosed a note: "Bring a friend -- if you have one."

Churchill wrote back, "Thank you, but I cannot attend opening night. Will attend second night -- if there is one."
